FROM THE DESK OF PASTOR VICKIE
This week I visited three individuals with varying degrees of dementia. It is always a surprise when I visit. For those in locked memory units, their world has become exceedingly small. Their small dining room is sometimes their office, or they talk about people they see there. Experts in dementia tell us to simply join them in their world at that time when we are not sure what they are telling us. As such, I have been privileged to be in the Air Force, living in Florida, working as a social worker, or in the medical field. I have learned much when I join them where they are. I ask questions and they give real answers.
A lady handed me a two-page daily newsletter that she receives every day. It is called the Daily Chronicle. I see the same publication when I am visiting other facilities. She said to me, “I am sure you can get a sermon or two out of this.” I thanked her and brought it home. I read it and then thought, I will share with you in the Liberty Link this week.
Stephanie Kwolek (1923-2014) was the American Dupont Chemist who invented Kevlar. This remarkably strong, lightweight, heat-resistant, puncture-resistant, lifesaving miracle material is used today in everything from body armor to airplanes to tennis rackets. Stephanie Kwolek won many prestigious awards and continued to mentor young women in science long after she retired. A quote by her, “I got to meet the troopers whose lives had been saved by Kevlar products. It was a very moving occasion for me.”
Thank you for allowing me to visit extraordinary Liberty members and extended family who are much like Stephanie Kwolek. It is often a moving occasion for me as well.
Join me this Sunday as I share from Leviticus 19, sometimes called the “Old Testament Sermon on the Mount”, as well as sharing communion.
