June 26 Inspiration

“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.” –Isaiah 49:16

 Dear Friends:

I am finding the Black Lives Matter motto heart-breaking. How about you? Our reactions are probably all over the spectrum.

I personally find this slogan heart-breaking because the verb seems so small – “matter”. In all my years as a parent, none of my kids ever asked me if they mattered. They knew they mattered – not just to me but to the world around them. Their schools cheered them on, telling them that they had infinite potential, that they were gifted and destined to change the world. And I hope that they do! But, it is painful to imagine hearing the message that you don’t matter your whole life.

I am trying to listen carefully to the stories of Black Lives Matter instead of turning away, to listen instead of dismissing them as “one-0ffs” not happening in my backyard, or just too painful to hear.  And as I listen, what can I say? It is far more than the heart can bear.

Everyone matters in God’s eyes.  Our names are engraved in the very palms of His hands.  And I want to shout from the roof tops that anyone of any race, creed or color who thinks that they don’t matter – you are infinitely precious in  God’s eyes.  YOU MATTER. And it is up to us as believers to make sure everyone knows it.
